This patio umbrella size chart page gives you a size calculator and three charts for patio umbrellas. Enter your table’s shape and measurements, and the calculator works out the smallest round canopy that reaches past the table edge, the nearest umbrella sizes, and the shade area. It runs in your browser, is free, needs no sign-up, and uploads nothing you enter. The charts below list table sizes against umbrella sizes for round and rectangular umbrellas, along with shade areas. Results are calculated from your inputs or taken from the named size guides. Sizes vary by maker, so check the specifications of the umbrella you plan to buy.

How to use the patio umbrella size calculator

  1. Under “Table shape”, choose Round, Square or Rectangle.
  2. Pick the units next to each size box: inches, feet, centimeters or meters.
  3. Enter the table size. For a round table, enter “Table diameter”. For a square table, enter the length. For a rectangle, enter “Table length (long side)” and “Table width (short side)”.
  4. Check “Overhang past the table edge”. It starts at 24 in, about 2 ft past the edge on every side. A warning appears below 12 in or above 36 in.
  5. In the advanced options, if people will pull out chairs, enter “Extra for pulled-out chairs (inches)”. One size guide says chairs pull out 6 to 8 inches.
  6. Also under advanced options, if the pole will not sit in the middle of the table, enter “Pole off the table center (inches)”, measured along the table length. The canopy must then be larger.
  7. Read “Smallest round canopy”, the diameter in feet.
  8. Read “Sizes in the guides”. If your minimum falls between two sizes, the calculator names the smaller size, how many inches short it is, and the larger size that covers it.
  9. Read “Shade at that diameter” and “Shade at the listed size”.
  10. Read “Smallest rectangular canopy”: the table length and width plus twice the overhang, plus any chair allowance.

A zero or negative size, a negative overhang, or text instead of a number gives an error instead of a result.

How big a patio umbrella does a round table need?

A round canopy needs a radius equal to the table radius, plus any chair allowance, plus the overhang. Because the default overhang is 24 in, a round canopy is about four feet wider than the table’s diameter. For example, a 48 in round table with a 24 in overhang needs a canopy 96 in (8 ft) across, which is a listed size and shades about 50.27 sq ft.

How is the umbrella size found for a square or rectangular table?

A round canopy has to reach the farthest corner of a square or rectangular table. Its radius is half the table’s diagonal plus the overhang. For a 75 × 38 in table, the diagonal is 84.08 in, so the canopy needs a diameter of 132.08 in (about 11.006 ft). An 11 ft umbrella is 0.0773 in short, and a 12 ft umbrella covers it. One of the size guides gives 11 ft for this table, so the result here matches that guide.

What does the 24 inch overhang do?

The overhang is the distance the canopy extends past the table edge on every side. The default of 24 in, or about 2 ft, comes from one manufacturer’s size guide, which says the canopy should reach about two feet past the table edge. You can change this value. It must be a positive number, because a negative overhang gives an error.

How do chair space and pole position change the size?

Chair space is added to the table radius before the overhang. If people pull chairs out, the canopy needs to reach past them as well. Pole position works differently. When the pole is off center, the farthest point of the table is farther from the pole, so the canopy must be larger to cover it.

Why do stated shade areas differ from the formula?

Shade area is calculated with π × (diameter ÷ 2)². For a 6 ft umbrella, that gives 28.3 sq ft, and for 8 ft it gives 50.3 sq ft. Some guides state slightly larger figures for small sizes. One guide states 30 sq ft for 6 ft, 52 for 8 ft, 65 for 9 ft and 80 for 10 ft, while the formula gives 28.3, 50.3, 63.6 and 78.5. The calculator shows the formula result, and the charts show both formula and stated figures.

Do umbrella sizes match across brands?

No. The listed sizes of 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 ft come from the three guides used on this page, and each maker may offer different sizes. No cantilever canopy size table was found in these sources, so none is listed. The calculator still works for any canopy centered on its pole. Always confirm the size of the specific umbrella you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

What umbrella size do I need for a 48 inch round table?

With the default 24 in overhang, a 48 in round table needs a canopy 96 in (8 ft) across. That is a listed size, and it shades about 50.27 sq ft.

Is the calculator result a code requirement?

No. The result is calculated from the numbers you enter. It is not a code or safety rule, and it does not check how an umbrella will hold up in wind.

Why does my result fall between two sizes?

The calculator gives the smallest round canopy that covers your table. If that diameter falls between two listed sizes, it names the smaller size, tells you how many inches short it is, and gives the larger size that covers it.

Does moving the pole change the umbrella size?

Yes. If you enter how far the pole sits from the table center, the farthest point moves away from the pole. The calculator then gives a larger minimum canopy.

Can I use the calculator for a square table?

Yes. Enter the length and width, and the calculator gives the smallest round canopy that reaches the farthest corner. It also gives the smallest rectangular canopy, which is the table length and width plus twice the overhang and any chair allowance.

Is the calculator free, and does it upload my numbers?

It is free and needs no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is uploaded.
