How to use the Lawn Mowing Cost Calculator
- Under “How do you know the lawn size?”, choose “Length and width (ft)”, “Total area (ft²)” or “Acres”. Then enter “Lawn length (ft)” and “Lawn width (ft)”, or the area. Presets fill in common sizes.
- If part of the lot is not mowed, enter it under “Area you do not mow (ft²)”: the house, drive, beds and patio. Leave it blank for none.
- Enter “Mower cutting width (in)” and “Mowing speed (mph)”. Use your mower’s deck width and real ground speed.
- Set “Field efficiency (%)”. This is the share of time the mower is cutting new grass. Turns, overlap and stops lower it. The page starts at 75 %; change it to match your lawn.
- Add “Trimming and set-up time per mow (minutes)” for string trimming, edging and blowing off. Leave it blank for none.
- Type “Your hourly rate ($ per hour)” to get a cost per mow. If you have a price from a lawn service, type it under “A quote you were given ($ per mow)” to see what it works out to per hour and per 1,000 ft².
- Enter “Mows per season” to get a seasonal total. Under More options, add “Fuel and wear ($ per hour)”, “Trip fee or travel ($ per visit)” and “Other lawn care per season ($)”.
- Read the result. “Time per mow” always appears. Cost lines appear once you enter a price.
A blank, zero or negative value where a number is needed shows an error message.
How long does it take to mow a lawn?
Mowing time is the lawn area divided by the area the mower covers in an hour, plus your trimming time. The area per hour is the cutting width in feet times the speed in miles per hour times 5,280 feet per mile times the field efficiency. The same rule is written in acres as: acres per hour = speed (mph) × width (ft) × efficiency ÷ 8.25, which is the area-capacity formula in a Purdue University Extension paper on machine sizing. The 8.25 is 43,560 square feet per acre divided by 5,280 feet per mile.
For example, a 120 × 80 ft lawn is 9,600 ft². A 42 in mower is 3.5 ft wide. At 3 mph and 75 % efficiency it covers 3.5 × 3 × 5,280 × 0.75 = 41,580 ft² per hour, so the lawn takes 9,600 ÷ 41,580 = 0.231 hours, or 13.85 minutes, plus any trimming time.
The Purdue paper says field efficiency for forage operations typically runs from 0.65 to 0.8. That range is for hay equipment, not lawn mowers, so this page does not set an efficiency for you. Use a figure that matches your own lawn: a lawn with many beds and trees has more turns and a lower figure.
How do I work out what mowing costs?
The cost per mow is the hours (mowing plus trimming) times your hourly rate, plus any fuel and wear per hour and any trip fee. The cost per season is the cost per mow times the number of mows. The cost per 1,000 ft² is the cost per mow divided by the mowed area in thousands of square feet.
With the example lawn, 10 minutes of trimming and a $60 hourly rate typed in, the time is 23.85 minutes (0.3975 hours) and the cost is $23.85 per mow. Over 28 mows that is $667.88. These are test numbers to show the arithmetic. The page supplies no prices of its own.
If you have a quote, the page turns it around: the quote divided by the hours gives the hourly rate it implies, which you can compare with what you would earn or pay by the hour.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to mow a lawn?
This page does not show a typical price. Enter your own hourly rate or a quote and the lawn size to see the cost per mow, per 1,000 ft² and per season.
How long does it take to mow an acre?
It depends on the mower width, speed and efficiency. At 60 in wide, 5 mph and 80 % efficiency, one acre takes about 25 minutes of mowing, from 5 × 5 × 0.8 ÷ 8.25 = 2.42 acres per hour. Enter your own mower and speed to get your figure.
Is this a lawn care cost calculator?
Yes. Mowing is calculated from the lawn size and your prices. For fertilizing, weed control or aeration, type the yearly total under “Other lawn care per season ($)” and the page adds it to the mowing cost.
What is field efficiency?
It is the share of the time the mower is cutting new grass. Turns, overlapping passes and stops lower it. The page asks for it as a percentage and starts at 75 %.
Why does the page show no cost?
If no hourly rate, fuel figure, trip fee or quote is entered, the page shows only the mowing time and asks for prices. Type a price to see a cost.
Does the calculator include trimming?
Only if you enter it. Type the minutes you spend trimming, edging and blowing off under “Trimming and set-up time per mow (minutes)” and they are added to the time and the cost.
